Summary (Key Points)
PlateSage is a consumer nutrition and wellness insights app. It can calculate and display a Body Balance Score and Action Points using limited categories of data described below.
You can use PlateSage with limited functionality without Apple Health/HealthKit or other device integrations. If you connect Apple Health/HealthKit, PlateSage may read certain activity, measurement, and nutrition-related data (with your permission) and may write back certain measurements you update in the App (currently weight and waist circumference).
We use service providers (like Firebase and Passio Nutrition) to operate features. We do not sell personal information or health data, and we do not use HealthKit data for advertising.
Meal photos: If you upload meal photos, we use them to provide photo-based features and to improve the Services (including machine learning). If you delete your account, we delete "Identifiable Meal Photos" associated with your account within the same timelines described below for account deletion, subject to limited legal, security, and operational exceptions. We may retain "Non-Identifiable Meal Photos" (and/or de-identified, aggregated, or derived versions of meal-photo data) for training and product improvement to the extent permitted by applicable law.
Definitions
"Personal Data": Information that identifies, relates to, describes, is reasonably capable of being associated with, or could reasonably be linked to you or your household (e.g., email address, name, identifiers).
"Health Data" / "Sensitive Data": Personal Data about your health, wellness, physical characteristics or measurements, nutrition, activity, or similar information. This includes the measurements and meal-related data described in this Policy.
"User Content": Content you submit to the Services, such as meal logs, text notes, and photos (including meal photos and optional profile photos).
"Body Balance Score": A numeric score generated by PlateSage intended to reflect trends in wellness-related inputs (e.g., activity, measurements, and nutrition logs) within the App. It is an informational output of PlateSage and not a medical metric.
"Action Points": A points-based metric generated by PlateSage to reflect engagement and progress toward in-app goals (e.g., logging meals, activity-related targets). It is an informational output of PlateSage and not a medical metric.
Eligibility; No Children
The Services are intended for adults 18+ only. We do not knowingly collect Personal Data from anyone under 18, and we do not offer teen accounts or parental consent flows.
Information We Collect
We collect information from (a) you, (b) your connected integrations (if you enable them), (c) your device and usage, and (d) app store platforms for billing.
1. Account and Identifiers
Account credentials: Email/password login; Sign in with Apple; Sign in with Google.
First name (optional): If you choose to provide it during signup or later.
Account identifiers: Your email or the identifier associated with Apple/Google sign-in (often an email address or proxy identifier).
Subscription and purchase metadata: Subscription status, product identifier, purchase timestamps, and related transaction metadata from Apple App Store / Google Play (we do not receive or store full payment card numbers).
2. Measurements and User Info (Limited Set)
We collect the following measurements and related user info, as provided by you and/or through enabled integrations:
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Height
  • Weight
  • Waist circumference
  • Hip circumference
3. Nutrition and Meal Tracking (User-Driven)
  • Meal logs and entries you submit
  • Nutrition information derived from your meal logs
  • Optional text notes
  • Optional meal photos (if you upload them)
  • Optional profile photo (if you upload one)
4. Apple Health / HealthKit and Other Integrations (Optional; Permission-Based; Read + Write)
If you connect Apple Health/HealthKit, PlateSage requests permissions you control in Apple Health.
HealthKit READ access (with your permission) may include:
  • Activity data needed for features and scoring
  • Measurements listed above to the extent available via HealthKit
  • Nutrition-related data associated with logged meals to the extent available via HealthKit
HealthKit WRITE access (with your permission): PlateSage may write back weight and waist circumference values when you update those values inside PlateSage, to avoid inconsistencies between PlateSage and HealthKit.
Hip circumference note: As of the Effective Date, Apple Health/HealthKit may not support hip circumference as a standard writable measurement type. PlateSage therefore treats hip circumference as App-provided (and, in the future, potentially provided by other supported devices/services) rather than written back to HealthKit.
Other devices/services: We may add additional supported device or service integrations over time. Any such integrations will be permission-based and limited to the same scope categories described in this Policy (measurements listed above, meal/nutrition logging data, and necessary activity data for scoring).
Background vs. user-initiated sync: Sync may occur in the background and/or be user-initiated depending on your settings and OS behavior.
Revoking permissions: You can revoke HealthKit permissions at any time in Apple Health settings. If you revoke permissions, some features may be reduced or unavailable.
No advertising use / no sale: We do not use HealthKit data for advertising and we do not sell HealthKit data.
5. Device and Usage Data
We collect standard telemetry such as:
  • Device type and model
  • Operating system version
  • App version
  • IP address
  • Timestamps and general usage events (e.g., feature interactions)
  • Crash/diagnostic signals
6. Analytics
We use Firebase Analytics to understand app usage and improve the Services. We do not integrate advertising SDKs and do not use cross-app tracking for ads.
7. Support Communications
If you contact us (e.g., help@platesage.com), we collect the contents of your message and metadata needed to respond.
How We Use Information
We use collected information to:
  • Provide, operate, and maintain the Services
  • Create and manage accounts (including optional first name)
  • Calculate and display the Body Balance Score and Action Points
  • Enable meal logging, nutrition insights, and related features
  • Sync permitted data with Apple Health/HealthKit or other enabled integrations
  • Provide customer support and respond to requests
  • Monitor, secure, and protect the Services (fraud prevention, abuse detection, incident response)
  • Improve and develop the Services (including product improvement and model training as described in "Meal Photos" below)
  • Conduct analytics to understand usage and performance
  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms
How We Disclose Information
We do not sell your Personal Data or Health Data. We disclose information only as described here.
Service Providers (Processors)
We share information with vendors that help us operate the Services, including:
  • Firebase (Google) for database/storage and related infrastructure (encryption in transit and at rest as provided by Firebase)
  • Firebase Analytics for analytics
  • Passio Nutrition to process meal-related inputs (including meal photos and/or meal entries) to provide nutrition analysis and insights
We require service providers to process information only on our documented instructions and only for the purposes described in this Policy. Service providers are contractually restricted from using Personal Data or Health Data for their own purposes (including their own product improvement, analytics unrelated to our Services, advertising, or model training), except to the extent necessary to provide services to us.
App Store Billing Providers
Apple and Google process subscription payments. We receive subscription status and purchase metadata needed to provide access.
Affiliate Marketing (Limited)
If you sign up through an affiliate referral, we may share limited signup or purchase confirmation information strictly necessary to pay affiliate marketers (e.g., confirmation that a subscription was purchased). We do not share Health Data for affiliate payments.
Friend Sharing (By Invite; User-Controlled)
PlateSage includes an optional feature that lets you share Body Balance Score and Action Points with friends:
  • Sharing is off by default.
  • Sharing is by invite to specific people you select.
  • What friends can see: Body Balance Score and Action Points (and your chosen display identifier, described below).
  • Display identifier shown: We recommend selecting a non-email display identifier (e.g., a nickname or handle). If you do not choose one, it may default to an identifier associated with your sign-in method (which may be your email or an Apple/Google identifier).
  • Controls: you can stop sharing, remove friends, and revoke access at any time in the App.
Legal, Safety, and Business Transfers
We may disclose information:
  • To comply with law, lawful requests, subpoenas, or legal process
  • To protect rights, safety, and security of users, the public, or our Services
  • In connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, sale of assets, or similar transaction (subject to this Policy and applicable law)
Meal Photos: Training/Product Improvement; Retention; Deletion on Account Deletion
If you upload meal photos, you are choosing to submit User Content that we use to (a) provide photo-based features and (b) improve the Services, including for research and development, quality assurance, feature improvement, and machine learning and related techniques.
Identifiable vs. non-identifiable photos
Meal photos may sometimes include personal or identifying information (for example, a face, address, mail, government ID, or other sensitive identifiers). For clarity:
"Identifiable Meal Photos" means meal photos that reasonably can be used to identify you or another person, or that contain personal identifiers (including faces, addresses, mail, government IDs, medical documents, or similar sensitive identifiers).
"Non-Identifiable Meal Photos" means meal photos that, as reasonably determined by us, do not contain personal identifiers and are not reasonably capable of identifying you or another person.
Account deletion and Identifiable Meal Photos
If you delete your account, we will delete Identifiable Meal Photos associated with your account within the same deletion timelines described in this Policy for account deletion and related deletion requests, subject to limited legal, security, and operational exceptions (for example, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, or compliance with law). We may retain a limited record that a deletion request was processed.
Non-Identifiable Meal Photos and training
We may retain and use Non-Identifiable Meal Photos (and/or de-identified, aggregated, or derived versions of meal-photo data) for training and product improvement purposes, including machine learning, even after account deletion, to the extent permitted by applicable law.
No guarantee of de-identification
We may reduce embedded metadata (such as EXIF) and/or take steps to dissociate meal photos from direct account identifiers where feasible, but we do not guarantee that any particular photo can be fully de-identified.
User choice
You can use PlateSage without uploading meal photos, though some photo-based features may be reduced or unavailable.
Do not upload personal identifiers
Do not upload photos containing faces, addresses, mail, government IDs, medical documents, or other sensitive identifiers. We may remove, restrict, or delete content that violates these requirements.
Your Choices and Controls
Account and Profile
You can update certain account/profile information in the App (if available), including optional first name. You can choose not to provide optional fields.
Account deletion: If an in-app delete option is available, you can delete your account through the App settings. Otherwise, you can request account deletion by emailing help@platesage.com.
Integrations Permissions (HealthKit and Others)
You control Apple Health/HealthKit permissions through Apple Health settings and can revoke them at any time. If you disable an integration, we stop collecting new data from that integration, but we may retain previously collected data per the Retention section (except where deletion applies).
Friend Sharing
Sharing is optional and off by default. You control who you invite and can stop sharing at any time.
Notifications and Marketing
Transactional and service messages may be sent as needed (e.g., account notices). Push notifications require your OS-level permission; you can disable them in your device settings. Marketing emails are sent only with your consent, and you can unsubscribe.
Data Retention
We retain information as follows:
Active subscription: We retain your account, logs, measurements, and related data while your subscription is active (even if you are not actively using the App).
If your subscription lapses OR you become inactive: We retain your account-related data up to 18 months from the earlier of: your subscription lapse date, or your last user login date. After that 18-month period without renewal/login (as defined above), we delete the data.
Account deletion: If you delete your account, we delete associated Personal Data and user logs from our active systems, generally within 30 days, subject to limited legal/security exceptions and our backup deletion cadence.
Backups: Deleted data may persist in encrypted backups for a limited period and will be removed in accordance with our backup retention cycle (generally up to 90 days), unless we are required to retain it longer for legal, security, or operational reasons.
Meal photos: If you upload meal photos, we handle retention as described in "Meal Photos" above. In summary: we delete Identifiable Meal Photos associated with your account following account deletion within the timelines described here (subject to limited exceptions), and we may retain Non-Identifiable Meal Photos (and/or de-identified, aggregated, or derived versions) for training and product improvement to the extent permitted by law.
Data access/export: Data export may not be available in-app at launch. You can request a copy of the primary information associated with your account (such as profile details, logged meals, and measurements) by emailing help@platesage.com. We will provide it in a commonly used format where reasonably feasible, subject to verification and applicable legal exceptions.
Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information. We use Firebase as our database/storage provider, which supports encryption in transit and at rest.
No method of storage or transmission is completely secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Access to production user data is restricted to authorized administrators, and access is logged. We maintain an incident response process.
International Transfers (If Applicable)
If you access the Services from outside the United States, your information may be processed in the United States or other jurisdictions that may have different data protection laws.
US Privacy Rights (Including California and Other States)
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, delete, or correct certain Personal Data, and to opt out of certain processing.
How to submit requests: Email help@platesage.com. We may need to verify your identity.
California: If the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended) applies, California residents may have additional rights, such as the right to know, delete, correct, and limit use of certain sensitive personal information, subject to legal exceptions. We do not sell personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Other state privacy laws may provide similar rights; we will comply as applicable.
Consumer Health Data Privacy Notice (Washington, Nevada, and Similar Laws)
This Notice supplements the PlateSage Privacy Policy and applies to "Consumer Health Data" as defined by certain state laws (including Washington's My Health My Data Act and Nevada's consumer health data law). If there is a conflict between this Notice and the main Privacy Policy regarding Consumer Health Data, this Notice controls to the extent required by applicable law.
Categories of Consumer Health Data we collect

  • Health and body measurements you provide (e.g., height, weight, waist circumference, age, sex)
  • Nutrition and meal-related information (e.g., meal logs, nutrition goals, meal entries)
  • Meal photos you upload (see "Meal Photos")
  • Activity and device data you connect through integrations you authorize (e.g., Apple Health/HealthKit data categories you permit)
  • Inferences and derived metrics generated from the above (e.g., Body Balance Score, Action Points, trends)
Purposes for collection and use
We collect and use Consumer Health Data to:
  • Provide and personalize the Services (including scoring, insights, and tracking)
  • Maintain, secure, debug, and improve the Services
  • Conduct research and development and quality assurance
  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms
Sources of Consumer Health Data
We collect Consumer Health Data from:
  • You (directly through the App, including uploads and manual entry)
  • Your authorized integrations (e.g., Apple Health/HealthKit, if you connect and permit data access)
  • Service providers acting on our behalf to support App functionality (e.g., nutrition analysis)
Sharing of Consumer Health Data
We do not sell Consumer Health Data. We share Consumer Health Data only as described in the Privacy Policy, including:
  • Service providers (processors) that help us operate the Services (e.g., cloud/database providers and nutrition-analysis providers)

Depending on your state of residence, you may have rights to:
  • Access and receive a copy of your Consumer Health Data
  • Delete your Consumer Health Data
  • Withdraw consent for certain collection or sharing, where applicable
  • Appeal certain decisions regarding your rights requests (where required by law)
How to exercise your rights
Email help@platesage.com with your request. We may need to verify your identity. Where required by law, if you request deletion we will also notify relevant processors/contractors with whom we shared the Consumer Health Data so they can honor the deletion request, subject to legal exceptions.
GDPR/UK Notice (If Applicable)
If GDPR/UK GDPR applies, you may have rights including access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, and portability (where applicable). You may also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
Our lawful bases may include performance of a contract, legitimate interests, consent (for certain permissions), and legal obligations, depending on the context.
Data Breach Notification (FTC HBNR and State Laws)
PlateSage is not a HIPAA covered entity and does not operate as a HIPAA business associate for this consumer app use case. Because PlateSage is a direct-to-consumer wellness app, the FTC Health Breach Notification Rule (HBNR) may apply in certain circumstances (for example, if PlateSage qualifies as a vendor of personal health records or a related entity and experiences a breach of unsecured PHR identifiable health information).
If the HBNR applies, it generally requires notice to affected individuals and the FTC, and in certain cases the media, within the timeframes and in the manner required by the Rule.
We will also comply with applicable U.S. state breach-notification laws. For example, where required, we may provide notice to affected residents within statutory deadlines, subject to permitted delays (such as law enforcement needs and measures to determine scope and restore system integrity).
If a breach affects California residents, California law may require notice within 30 calendar days of discovery or notification of the breach, subject to applicable exceptions, and may require submission of a sample copy of the consumer notice to the California Attorney General in certain circumstances (such as when more than 500 California residents are affected).
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. We will update the "Effective Date" above and, if changes are material, we may provide additional notice.
